The Benefits of Spaying/Neutering

Spaying/neutering your pet is one of the most important things you can do — for you and your pet.

Your veterinarian can discuss the benefits, including:

  • Better behavior, including less aggression, spraying or marking territory, or roaming;
  • A lower risk of developing tumors, cancer and other diseases; and
  • Fewer unwanted litters, reducing the number of pets in shelters.

In addition to a longer, healthier life, spaying/neutering:

  • Won’t change your pet’s personality (the only behavior changes are positive ones!);
  • Is the best option if you do not want the hassle of breeding your pet or having it go into heat; and
  • Is affordable, with participating veterinarians offering discounts to residents who qualify.

How It Works

Spaying/neutering is a routine procedure performed with anesthesia. Most pets will be able to go home the same day, but, depending on their age and size, some pets will stay at the veterinarian’s office overnight.

Pets are commonly spayed or neutered before they go into puberty (as early as eight weeks of age). You can talk to your veterinarian for more information and the best possible care.
